Below are a few questions that Appy Parents asked and our Appy Expert, Dr. Neha Sanwalka answered. Please note that names have been changed for confidentiality purposes.

Appy Mom, Paragi's Question:

My 10 year old daughter has always been underweight. But she has been putting on weight since 3 years, her weight is now 40 Kgs. Her thyroid levels are normal and she eats very less. What should I do?

Appy Expert, Dr. Neha Sanwalka Responds:

As her thyroid levels are normal and her diet is fairly low, here are some of the reasons why your daughter may be gaining weight rapidly:

  1. Physical inactivity could be a major reason for weight gain. Is she active? Does she play in the garden enough? If she is inactive, encourage her to play at least one hour daily. You could enrol her in swimming, lawn tennis, badminton or any other sports of her choice. See if an increase in activity helps to loose weight.
  2. Is your daughter the tallest in her class? Has her height also increased a lot in last 3 years. If yes, she has stepped into puberty. You may feel it's too early, but girls are stepping into puberty as early as 7-8 years of age these days and it could be one of the reasons for weight gain. If this is the reason, please consult a paediatric endocrinologist as soon as you can
  3. Are her other hormones in control? Is her insulin level and blood glucose in control? Get her blood levels done and consult a doctor, if required.

Appy Mom, Fathima's Question:

My baby is 3.5 months right now her weight is 5.26kg. Is it ok?

Appy Expert, Dr. Neha Sanwalka Responds:

What was your baby's birth weight? Normally birth weight doubles by 6 months and triples by the time the child is one year.

If your baby's weight gain is higher than expected, as probably in your case, you may want to get her thyroid (Free T4, Free T3, TSH) checked and also the serum insulin levels. Hope this helps you.

Appy Mom, Surya's Question:

How can I increase his weight by just semi solid diet because baby has oesophageal atresia?

Appy Expert, Dr. Neha Sanwalka Responds:

Some ingredients that you could add to make your baby's food nutrient dense include:

  • Paneer
  • Whole Milk powder
  • Protein supplement like pediasure
  • Nuts like almonds can be added when you make puree
  • You could give him pureed sprouts soup too, as its very nutritious
  • Whole Egg (if you eat them) would make a great addition to your baby's diet.
